Maintaining your Digital Caliper

Calipers, since these came into existence in 1860s, underwent evolution in many ways. The highpoints of these changes started with a second pair of jaws being added to the design in 1899, which allowed both inside and outside measurements. Around 1951 a dial indicator got introduced and enabled faster readings and gave higher resolution. Advancement in technology in the 1980s gave us with the digital indicator which eventually made data collection possible. The early 21st Century brought in calipers with hardened electronics that could be used in wet environments, these were waterproof digital calipers. In the recent past we see that the calipers were incorporated with improved scales that never lose their position.

And today we use the most efficient of digital calipers for working. They say- “with great power comes great responsibility”. So with a powerful measuring tool comes the responsibility of maintaining it for the longer run. One of the most eminent precondition for ensuring the quality of your caliper is its proper usage. Its accuracy and reliability can only be maintained for a longer period by taking good care of it.

Tips on maintaining your digital caliper

  • First way to start the maintenance regime is by using the instrument in accordance to the operation instructions it comes with.
  • Before taking a measurement, ensure that you wipe the measuring face of the caliper and also the object to be measured. This will help in preventing any sort of negative effect on the measuring accuracy. Tools such as digital vernier calipers should not be used to measure forged roughcast or abrasive bearing pieces. This is because the measuring face gets abraded, resulting in falling of its accuracy.
  • When not in use keep your digital calipers away from hand tools such as files, cutting tools, drills and hammers. Storing them together can result in the instrument’s distortion.
  • Do not use caliper to substitute other tools. The idea is to use the tools for the purpose they are designed for. It is found that several people replace their micrometer for a small hammer, use vernier calipers for marking lines etc. This can mar the accuracy of any precision measuring tool.
  • While using digital calipers it is important for you to be aware of immediate working area. This is important because if these tools are brought near a magnetic area, they tend to get magnetized.
  • With constant use one might notice phenomena such as rough surfaces, rusts, body distortion or ineffective working. It is advised that the user does not fix it using hammers or files themselves. As a matter of fact your instrument should be sent to a professional help or repair depot.
  • After using your caliper to work do not carelessly put it aside. It is important that you clean the tools. You can even daub them with anti-rust oil and store them in a dry place to avoid rust damaging the caliper.

So the next time you buy digital caliper do bot forget you need to good take care of it.
